Year 4 Times Tables Check: A Parent's Guide

A straightforward guide to the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check and why fluent times-table recall is worth building — plus practical ways to practise at home.

Many English primary schools use an online check in Year 4, often referred to as the Multiplication Tables Check, to see how quickly and confidently pupils can recall their times tables. If you'd like the exact current details — dates, format or how results are used — your child's school or the official GOV.UK guidance is the right place to check, since these details are set nationally and can be updated from year to year.

What matters more than any single check, though, is the skill behind it. Being able to recall multiplication facts instantly, without working them out from scratch each time, makes almost every other area of maths easier — from long multiplication to fractions, ratio and percentages. This guide focuses on that underlying skill: what to check, where children commonly find it trickier, and simple ways to build fluency at home without turning it into a chore.

Which Times Tables Should My Child Know?

The general expectation by the end of Year 4 is that children can recall multiplication and division facts confidently for all the times tables up to 12 × 12 — not just chant them in order, but answer a random question from any table quickly and correctly. Use this as a simple visual checklist and tick off the ones your child can already answer confidently, in any order, not just from the start:

  • 11×
  • 12×

Quick Parent Check

You don't need any special materials for this — just ask a few questions out loud, ideally mixed up rather than in order, and see how quickly and confidently the answer comes back:

Try asking: 6 × 7  ·  8 × 4  ·  9 × 6  ·  12 × 7  ·  56 ÷ 8  ·  72 ÷ 9

Notice that the last two are division facts, not multiplication. That's deliberate — division facts use exactly the same underlying knowledge (56 ÷ 8 is really just asking "8 times what makes 56?"), so practising them together reinforces both at once, rather than treating them as two separate things to learn.

Pay attention to hesitation as well as accuracy. A correct answer that arrives after a long pause, or after visibly counting up on fingers, often means the fact isn't fully secure yet — it's being worked out rather than recalled. That's a useful thing to notice, because it points to exactly which facts would benefit from a bit more repetition, even if your child got every answer right this time.

Where Do Children Often Struggle?

Every child is different, and there's no single table that trips everyone up — but a handful of tables tend to come up in conversation with teachers and parents more often than others, usually because they don't follow an obvious pattern the way some others do:

  • 6× and 7× — right in the middle of the range, with fewer obvious shortcuts than tables like 2×, 5× or 10×.
  • — often mixed up with the 4× table, since doubling 4× gives 8×, which can cause slips if the doubling step goes wrong.
  • — some children find the pattern trick (digits of the answer always add up to 9) helpful; others find it an extra thing to remember on top of the fact itself.
  • 12× — simply larger numbers to hold in mind, though it often becomes easier once 2×, 10× and 6× are secure, since 12× can be built from combinations of those.

If your child finds one or two of these trickier than the rest, that's genuinely normal — it doesn't mean anything is wrong, just that those particular facts need a little more repetition to become automatic.

5 Ways to Practise at Home

1. Short, daily practice. Five minutes most days beats a single long session once a week — little and often is what makes facts stick.
2. Mix up the order. Reciting a table from 1× to 12× in sequence is a different (and easier) skill than answering a random question from it. Mix questions up once the sequence feels comfortable.
3. Practise multiplication and division together. As above, asking "7 × 8" and "56 ÷ 7" side by side reinforces the same underlying fact from both directions.
4. Focus extra time on weaker tables. There's little value in repeating tables your child already knows well. A minute or two on the one or two trickier tables is usually more useful than five minutes covering everything evenly.
5. Use occasional timed challenges. Once accuracy is solid, a bit of gentle time pressure (like a short, fun challenge) helps build the quick recall that makes maths flow more smoothly elsewhere. Accuracy should always come first, though — speed without accuracy isn't the goal.

Parent Tip

Praise the improvement, not just the score. "You got that 8× question so much faster than last week" builds more genuine confidence than focusing only on a final result. Times tables fluency builds gradually, and noticing the progress along the way tends to keep children more motivated than only celebrating a perfect run.
