Year 6 SATs Maths: What Your Child Needs to Know

A practical, reassuring guide to Year 6 SATs maths for parents — what it covers, what to check at home, and how to help without turning every evening into a maths lesson.

If the phrase "SATs maths" brings to mind stacks of worksheets and a stressed-out kitchen table, it doesn't need to. Year 6 SATs maths covers a set of skills your child has been building since Year 3 — it isn't a separate subject that suddenly appears in Year 6, and it isn't something you need to teach from scratch at home.

What actually helps is understanding, in plain terms, what the important skills are, having a sense of which ones your child already feels confident with, and knowing which ones are worth a little extra attention. That's what this guide is for. There's no need for hours of extra work — a clear picture of where your child stands, plus short, regular practice on the right things, does far more than a big weekend of worksheets ever could.

What Does Year 6 SATs Maths Cover?

Year 6 SATs maths is generally split into two different types of question, and it helps to know the difference, because they test slightly different things:

  • Arithmetic — straightforward calculations set out clearly on the page, such as column addition, long multiplication, or working out a fraction of a number. There's usually one correct method and one correct answer, and the main skill being tested is calculating accurately.
  • Mathematical reasoning — questions set in words or real-life contexts, where your child first has to work out what maths to use before they can use it. This might mean reading a short problem about money, measurements or a table of data, and deciding which calculation actually answers the question.

Put simply: arithmetic tests whether your child can calculate; reasoning tests whether they can work out which calculation is needed in the first place, and then explain their thinking. Both matter, and a child can be strong in one and shakier in the other — which is exactly why it's worth checking both.

10 Maths Skills to Check

You don't need to test your child formally on all of this — a relaxed conversation or a couple of questions dropped into everyday life will tell you plenty. Here's a practical checklist of the key skill areas, with a simple example for each.

1. Addition and Subtraction

What to check: Can they add and subtract numbers with several digits, including decimals, using a written method they're confident with?

Try this: "What's 4,362 + 758?"

2. Multiplication

What to check: Can they multiply a multi-digit number by a two-digit number, and do they know their times tables well enough that this doesn't slow them down?

Try this: "What's 47 × 23?"

3. Division

What to check: Can they divide a larger number by a single-digit number, and do they understand what to do with a remainder?

Try this: "What's 156 ÷ 6? What about 157 ÷ 6?"

4. Fractions

What to check: Can they find a fraction of an amount, and simplify or compare simple fractions?

Try this: "What's three-quarters of 24?"

5. Decimals

What to check: Are they comfortable adding, subtracting and rounding decimals, including lining up decimal points correctly?

Try this: "What's 8.6 add 3.75?"

6. Percentages

What to check: Can they work out simple percentages of an amount, and do they understand how percentages relate to fractions?

Try this: "What's 20% of £45?"

7. Ratio

What to check: Do they understand what a ratio means, and can they use one to share an amount into unequal parts?

Try this: "If a recipe needs flour and sugar in a ratio of 3:1, and you use 150g of sugar, how much flour do you need?"

8. Measurement

What to check: Can they convert between units (like cm and m, or g and kg), and use measurements in a practical problem?

Try this: "A piece of ribbon is 2.4m long. How many 30cm pieces can be cut from it?"

9. Geometry

What to check: Do they know the properties of common 2D and 3D shapes, and can they calculate area and perimeter?

Try this: "A rectangle is 8cm long and 5cm wide. What's its area? What's its perimeter?"

10. Multi-Step Reasoning

What to check: Can they work through a problem that needs more than one calculation, in the right order, to reach the final answer?

Try this: "A ticket costs £8. A family of 2 adults and 3 children buys tickets, and children get £2 off each ticket. How much does the family pay in total?"

How Ready Is Your Child?

This isn't an official assessment, and it won't give you a score — it's simply a set of honest questions to help you get a feel for where your child is comfortable, and where a bit more practice might help.

  • Can they recall multiplication facts confidently, without counting up?
  • Can they use a written method accurately for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division?
  • Can they find a fraction of an amount without needing to be reminded how?
  • Can they calculate a simple percentage of an amount?
  • Can they explain, out loud, how they reached an answer?
  • Can they decide which operation a word problem actually needs, before starting to calculate?

A confident "yes" to most of these is a good sign. A shaky "yes" or a "not really" isn't a cause for alarm — it just tells you where to point some short, focused practice.

Common Problems (and Practical Fixes)

Most maths mistakes at this age come from a small handful of very fixable habits, rather than a genuine gap in understanding.

Rushing calculations: Many mistakes happen simply because a child moves too fast. Encourage writing each step down clearly, rather than trying to do too much "in their head" under pressure.
Misreading the question: A child who understands the maths can still get a question wrong by missing a key word (like "each", "altogether" or "remaining"). Try asking your child to underline or say out loud what the question is actually asking before they start.
Weak times-table recall: If tables aren't automatic, every multiplication and division question takes longer and leaves more room for error. Short, regular times-table practice pays off across almost every other topic.
Knowing the method but struggling with word problems: This is a reasoning gap, not a calculation gap. Practise turning simple, everyday situations into a maths question together, out loud, before writing anything down.
Not checking answers: A quick habit of asking "does that answer make sense?" catches a surprising number of errors — for example, a shop item that costs "£450 after a discount" clearly needs a second look.

How Much Practice Is Enough?

Short and regular beats long and occasional almost every time. Ten to fifteen focused minutes, three or four times a week, tends to build far more genuine confidence than an exhausting two-hour session at the weekend — and it's far easier to keep going with something manageable. There's no need to cram every topic at once, either; picking one or two areas from the checklist above and returning to them over a week or two is a perfectly sensible way to work through this guide.

If a topic still feels shaky after a few short sessions, that's useful information, not a problem — it simply tells you (and your child's teacher, if you want to mention it) exactly where to focus next.
