Writing Frame Builder

Pick a genre, a Key Stage and a topic to create a print-ready scaffolded writing frame with sentence starters — ready in seconds.

Leave blank to generate a generic frame you can fill in by hand.

How to use

The Writing Frame Builder creates a scaffolded structure of paragraph headings and sentence starters for pupils to build a piece of writing around.

  • Choose a genre — each one has a genuinely different structure, matching how that type of writing is actually organised.
  • Choose a Key Stage — KS1/KS2 frames use fewer, shorter sentence starters; KS3–KS5 frames use more sophisticated structure and connectives.
  • Type a topic and it will be woven into the prompts automatically.
  • Click Generate writing frame. Every heading and sentence starter can then be clicked and edited directly, so you can tweak wording before handing it out.
  • Use Copy text to paste the frame elsewhere, or Print for a clean handout with space for pupils to write.

Choose a genre, Key Stage and topic above, then click Generate writing frame to build your scaffold.
